Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie

Composed in 2010 and performed widely across London and the UK, Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie (Elliptical, of Joke and Elegies) is a substantial six-movement work for violin, clarinet, and piano trio. Its harmonic design traces the arc of an ellipse, allowing shifting pitch sets to orbit a central tonal focus. Across the piece, movements and melodic ideas alternate between scherzi and elegies, juxtaposing the playful and the reflective, the earthly and the spiritual. Through this continual contrast, the work aspires to encompass a rich and multifaceted universe—one that embraces both the mundane and the transcendent.

Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie is a work of considerable technical and musical challenge, yet it remains strikingly accessible and immediately engaging for the listener. Lyrical melodies weave through intricate counterpoint; propulsive rhythmic gestures gather momentum toward eccentric juxtapositions; elegiac lines rise into irrational, volatile figurations; and funky rhythms converge around powerful gravitational centres. The result is a rich and immersive composition—an ideal choice for chamber music programmes seeking to captivate and expand new audiences.

This composition was recently recorded by the internationally acclaimed musicians Alda Dizdari, Ruben Lopes Jacinto, and Giulia Semerano at the iconic St Pancras Clock Tower in London. The recording is set to be released as part of a new album in late 2026.
